The Core Principle
The main idea of Approx is learning interesting things while having fun. We put a lot of effort into balancing the game to ensure fairness.
Answer correctness always takes precedence, then answer speed is taken into account.
Players are encouraged to experiment with different rule sets in custom games.
The Origin Story
I like quizzes and I'm really competitive.
Some 20 years ago I was playing a quiz game with numerical answers. I answered 6, my opponent 7. The answer was like 205.
He won because he was technically closer, even though we were both way off, and we both should have lost. That day, I was robbed by the poor game design. I vowed to never forget.
When I started working as a software engineer in 2015, I wrote down an idea. After 11 years, most aspects of gameplay were planned out.
The main mechanic remained unchanged - a range is better than a single answer as it adds a layer of strategy and limits the effect of luck. The only balancing mechanism Approx needs are the other players.
